Youth hunting takes place in CA!

This article is about how California kids enjoyed a successful youth hunting experience.  Not much is more special then spending some time with youth hunters in a duck blind! Congrats to CA on having such an event!
Young waterfowl hunters have an opportunity to hone their skills this weekend at several federal wildlife areas.

The Department of Fish and Game announced this week that many federally managed wildlife areas, including the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex and Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, will be open Saturday and Sunday for the federally designated Youth Waterfowl Days, a department news release states.

The two-day event allows hunters 15 years old, accompanied by a non-hunting adult 18 or older, to hunt waterfowl.

Youth Hunting.Com’s Youth Hunter Profile

Here is a new part of the site that I am starting. I will be posting youths’ profiles that enjoy and take part of what it means to be a youth hunterYouth hunting is the future of our sport, and we need to support it! If you are a youth hunter and would like to submit your youth hunting profile, please email me at willie@outdoorfreaks.net

Name: Evan N.

Date of Birth: 10/13/92
Favorite thing to hunt:
Whitetails. But I also like hunting coons, squirrels, and rabbits
Person who introduced you to the outdoors: A family friend of ours who is a firefighter.  He was kind enough to take me out a while back deer hunting with his .357 magnum pistol.  I love it and have been hooked on deer hunting ever since!
Most memorable thing you’ve done while hunting: I haven’t gotten a deer yet, but I’m thinking next year will be my year! I have fallen out of my stand a few times! Also, a friend of mine and I were squirrel hunting one time, and we saw some coons probably 150 yards away up a hill - we both sprinted after them with our unloaded guns and treed them.We spend about 15 rounds on the coons, but we eventually got them!

Here is Evan during one of his cross country meets.

Youth hunting contest honors youth hunters!

I found this cool article on youth hunting in Vermont. What a great way to get the youngsters out in the field. Anyone participate in this youth hunt? Great article that was written by Burlington Free Press.

The winners of Vermont’s 2008 Youth Hunting and Fishing Memories Contest were honored last weekend at the Yankee Classic Sportsman’s Show in Essex Junction.

“The Youth Hunting and Fishing Memories Contest showcases the achievements of Vermont’s youth hunters and anglers through their short essays photos and art,” said Gov. Jim Douglas. “In addition to the 21 young people who are receiving awards, we have 92 youths who submitted wonderful essays capturing their thoughts, passions and experiences about fishing and hunting in Vermont.” Read more…

October youth hunting shut down in texas

Here is an article I found about a sad youth hunting story in Texas. It is very well written by Mike Leggett Check it out and let me know what you think about it!

In Texas, we keep talking a pretty good game when it comes to hunting opportunities for youngsters .

The operative word there is “talking” because when it comes to acting, we’re slower than Johnny Unitas.

Consider a wild-haired Wildlife Division proposal to make all of October a youth hunting season in Texas. Anybody who’s hung around Texas Parks and Wildlife for any period of time knows that Jack Brittingham, as a member of the White-tailed Deer Advisory Committee, made the same proposal years ago. It got shot down then, mostly because members of the Lone Star Bowhunters Association thought that kids going hunting with guns would interfere with their special early archery season. Read more…

Buck floats Yellowstone River on ice chunk

I found this extremely rare article today and wanted to share. Doesn’t have much value for youth hunting, or youth hunters, but just a interesting story! Enjoy!

It’s not every day … well, any day actually … that you see a whitetail buck floating down the river.

But on the morning of Dec. 22, Jason Ramirez’s excursion to the Yellowstone River west of Miles City provided an unusual sight: a four-point whitetail buck casually riding an ice chunk downstream as if it were a normal thing to do on a Monday morning commute.

Hunting club targets youth

It was a big night for the Hanna Rod and Gun Club on Jan. 10, as hunters from the surrounding area gathered around to shoot the breeze, rather than big game.

President John Akkermans said the event, called Scoring Night, tends to focus on youth hunting and fishing in attempts to revive the sport.

“We’ve been working with youth,” Akkermans said.

Even in youths’ online world, on-site training remains best

Another great article today on youth hunting in Pennsylvania.  This article going into detail about how “on-site” training is better for youths, as they learn the magic that is hunting.  Enjoy, and please bare with me as I figure out a way to fix the sidebar! Again, I remind you to please send in your youth hunting stories and/or pictures to me, I’ll get them up here for you!

After deer season, the woods grow quiet.

Only when small game and trapping seasons begin again does it reawaken and hunters return. But change is afoot, even in winter. Speculation about the state’s shrinking deer herd in its northern counties now runs parallel to a concern over the next generation of hunters taking up the sport. The question arises: In the future, will there be enough of either?

Youth hunting program teaches appreciation

I just found this awesome article about a youth hunting program out West. I think everyone could learn something from this piece! Enjoy!

KENAI — Melting snow filled the forest with a bell like tinkling noise as it dripped from the dense spruce branches onto the rain soaked snow covering the ground below.

“That noise is so pretty,” said Tamara Dotson, 14, of Kenai, as she paused in the middle of the Skilak Loop Wildlife Management Area in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.

Dotson wasn’t out to listen to the noise of the dripping water on the exceptionally warm early December afternoon, but it certainly didn’t take anything away from the experience of the hunt. Read more…

Youth hunting participants have a blast in Kansas!

Check out this sweet article on some youth hunters who enjoyed a great youth hunt in Kansas.  Late season youth hunts catch some flack on many states, but harvesting does in the late season is an excellent management tool, and it gives the youth hunters to see lots of deer on late season food patterns. Youth hunting is only going to get stronger!
